Why you should learn gemology
Here’s why you should learn gemology…
You may be in one of the below categories and considering whether it is necessary for you to learn gemology (in Singapore context, that is, with or without any form of grant or funding).
1. You are a buyer (or merchandiser for your company, or pawnbroker taking in a piece of gem-set jewellery from customer) or a collector
Learn gemology because:
You want to buy a gem (for pawnbrokers/auctioneers: you want to take in a gem) with confidence.
You want to buy/take in a gem/gem-set jewellery at the right value.
2. You are a jeweller/goldsmith/entrepreneur
Learn gemology because:
You want to be able to answer your customers’ questions with accuracy and with confidence, gaining trust from them.
You want to be able to create jewellery designs and make appropriate settings for different types of gemstones, thus increasing your range of offerings to customers.
3. You are a lapidary or a gem-cutter (or planning to be one when you retire)
Learn gemology because:
You can experiment gem-cutting techniques and styles for a wide variety of gemstones with confidence.
You can ensure that the gemstones that come through your hands for lapidary work will enhance the appearance of the gem, thus giving more value to it.
4. You are a student/scientist/researcher
Learn gemology because:
You can explore and develop new testing techniques to identify gemstone, its treatment and its origin, as well as research on new gem minerals discovered in nature.
You can have the opportunity to be part of the international community of gemologists that work in partnerships to bring about great benefits through research to the industry.

Feel free to put your thoughts in here! I have heard from an awesome teacher of the bible saying this: Great sermons are not to be agreed or to be disagreed. It is to be wrestled - Shane Willard
So wrestle with my thoughts in the blog posts and I will try to wrestle back in peace. :D
